Wrzesinski Takes Early Lead
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. – One performance into the 2012 National High School Finals Rodeo, Montana Bareback Rider Cavan Wrzesinski has already matched his best ride from the previous year.
The 18-year-old senior turned in a 72-point ride in the rodeo’s opening performance – the first of a four-year run in Rock Springs – to take the early lead in the first round of bareback riding. The score was a welcome sight for the cowboy from Boulder, Mont.
“I’ve never really gotten off to a good start here,” he said, despite the fact that he finished 10th in the final average standings in 2011. “Last year, I had a pretty good ride in the short round that helped me make up for the first round. I’m pretty excited about this. I talked with some guys who knew the horse, so I knew she would be good. She was just a nice horse, but pretty strong.”
A year ago, Wrzesinski turned in a 65-point effort in the first round and just got better from there. He followed with scores of 68 and 72 points in the second and short rounds, respectively, to earn a spot in the top 10 in the final event standings. After a 72 in the first round, he’ll be sitting pretty well on the final Saturday if he improve in every round again this year.
“It’s going to be pretty tough to sit around until Saturday now,” said the two-time Montana High School Rodeo Bareback Riding Champion. While he finished second in the state in 2012, he’s leading the nation one performance into seven days of non-stop rodeo action.
